Ameritas and Intelibly Are Turning the Provider Directory Into a Patient Acquisition Channel

Ameritas and Intelibly are turning a familiar piece of dental insurance infrastructure into something different: a patient-acquisition channel.

Under a newly announced relationship, Intelibly's Book Now capability is being embedded in the Ameritas provider directory. An Ameritas member searching for an in-network dentist can request or schedule an appointment from the directory without leaving the Ameritas experience or calling the practice.

That sounds like a scheduling feature.

The more important shift is in distribution.

For years, payer directories have largely functioned as searchable lists: find an in-network dentist, get the phone number, leave the payer site and contact the office.

Intelibly is trying to turn that traffic into a measurable funnel:

member search → in-network provider → available appointment → booked patient.

If that model expands, participation in a dental network begins to carry a new kind of value for practices: not just reimbursement access, but patient distribution.

What Ameritas and Intelibly Are Launching

According to the September 22 announcement, providers in the Ameritas network that have an Intelibly account can have a Book Now button automatically appear in the Ameritas provider directory.

Members can then move from searching for an in-network dentist to requesting or scheduling an appointment directly from the directory.

For the practice, Intelibly positions the channel as a way to receive new in-network patients without buying traditional advertising.

For Ameritas, the directory becomes more than a network-navigation tool. The carrier can get a clearer view of whether members searching its directory are actually connecting with participating providers.

That creates value on both sides of the network.

The Provider Directory Is Becoming a Transaction Layer

Dental payer directories have traditionally answered a narrow question:

Who is in network?

The next generation may answer a much more useful one:

Who is in network and can see me?

That distinction matters.

A directory containing thousands of provider records does not necessarily tell a member whether a dentist is accepting new patients, whether the office will answer the phone, or whether an appointment is available.

Adding real booking capability turns static network data into an access workflow.

The directory begins to connect three things that have historically been separated:

network participation + patient intent + provider capacity.

That is much more strategically interesting than online scheduling by itself.

The Payer Becomes a Distribution Channel

Most dental practices think about patient acquisition through Google, paid search, social media, referrals, aggregators and local marketing.

But insurers already possess something those channels do not: high-intent patients who are actively searching for an in-network provider.

That search behavior sits very close to the point of care.

Intelibly's model attempts to capture that demand before the patient leaves the payer ecosystem.

Instead of:

payer directory → Google → practice website → phone call → appointment

the path becomes:

payer directory → appointment.

For providers, that could make network participation more valuable beyond the negotiated fee schedule.

A carrier or network that can reliably send incremental patients to participating practices has another lever in its provider relationship.

Intelibly Is Building a Network, Not Just a Scheduling Widget

The Ameritas relationship is more meaningful when viewed alongside Intelibly's other distribution partnerships.

Intelibly previously announced relationships with Careington, Zelis, and more recently DenteMax around patient access and online booking. Its own materials describe the platform as connecting practices to patients through insurance carriers, dental plans and brand partners. citeturn1search2turn1search3turn1search5

That pattern suggests the core asset is not simply the Book Now button.

It is the network of places where that button can appear.

A scheduling product installed at one dental practice competes for traffic after a patient reaches the practice.

Intelibly is trying to sit further upstream, where patients are deciding which practice to choose in the first place.

That makes its payer and network relationships central to the product.

Why This Matters for DSOs

The model becomes particularly interesting at DSO scale.

A multi-location group may already participate in numerous carrier networks, but patient demand generated by those networks can be difficult to measure.

If carrier directories become bookable and attributable, a DSO could theoretically understand:

  • which payer relationships generate new-patient demand,
  • which locations convert directory searches into appointments,
  • where network demand exceeds available capacity,
  • which geographies have unused appointment supply,
  • and whether a payer relationship contributes value beyond reimbursement.

That begins to connect network strategy with patient acquisition strategy.

For groups negotiating with payers, that could eventually create a richer picture of the relationship than fee schedules alone.

There Is Also a Network-Management Story

The carrier benefits are easy to overlook.

A payer may know that a provider is contracted and listed in its directory without knowing whether members can actually obtain an appointment efficiently.

Booking data can provide another signal.

Searches, appointment requests, available capacity and completed booking flows could help carriers understand where a network is functioning well and where members encounter access friction.

Ameritas specifically says the initiative gives it clearer visibility into how its directory connects members with in-network practices. citeturn2view0

That means this category may ultimately sit at the intersection of patient acquisition and network intelligence.

The Important Questions

The model is compelling, but the operating details matter.

A Book Now button only creates value if practices maintain usable availability and the scheduling workflow accurately connects to their systems.

Practices and DSOs should distinguish between appointment requests and confirmed appointments, understand how availability is controlled, measure completed visits rather than clicks alone, and determine whether the patients are truly incremental.

The breadth of Intelibly's distribution network matters too. A provider-facing platform becomes more valuable as more high-intent carrier and partner traffic flows through it.

Intelibly says its premium practices typically receive 15–30 new-patient appointments per month, but that is a company-reported figure and results will vary by geography, network participation and demand. citeturn0search0

Avized Take

The most interesting part of the Ameritas–Intelibly announcement is not the scheduling button.

It is the changing role of the dental provider directory.

Historically, directories documented a network.

Now they can activate it.

When a member can go directly from an insurance search to an in-network appointment, the payer becomes part of the patient-acquisition funnel and the provider directory becomes measurable infrastructure.

Intelibly is assembling this model across multiple dental networks and partners. If it continues to scale, practices may start evaluating payer relationships on more than reimbursement and patient volume.

They may also ask:

How many patients does this network actually send me?

That would be a meaningful change in how dental practices think about network participation.
